Backflow testing is a required annual inspection of backflow prevention devices to ensure that they are working properly. Backflow prevention devices are installed to protect drinking water from contamination by backflow, which is the reverse flow of water into a potable water system.

• A sudden loss of water pressure
• A power outage
• Peak demand at a fire hydrant

Backflow testing is performed by a qualified backflow tester. The tester will put the backflow prevention device under pressure and inspect it for leaks or other defects. If the device is found to be working properly, it will be certified.

If the device is not working properly, it will need to be repaired or replaced. In some cases, the water supply may need to be shut down while the repairs are being made.
